Star of the Week: Gymnastics Week 1

Image
Week 1 (of 4) of gymnastics was so much fun! Gymnastics is challenging and requires determination,  Athenay, you displayed just that! You showed a fabulous 'can-do' attitude and gave everything your best shot. Keep up the good work!

The Key Competencies (The KCs)

At BHPS and in Room 1, we talk about the KCs on the daily. They are a big part of everything that we do at school. However, it doesn't have to stop there. The KCs are not just a tool for school. They are helpful at home and later on in life, too. "We all want to help our children to become capable learners, ready and willing to tackle lots of different things in life. Schools want that, too. Teachers spend a lot of time working to build students' knowledge and life skill in subjects such as Maths and English but they also try to develop children's capabilities". - In the New Zealand Curriculum these capabilities are called the Key Competencies. The 5 KCs are - Managing Self -Thinking - Participating and Contributing -Relating to Others - Using language, symbols and texts Encourage the use of the KCs at home Managing Self Brushing teeth, packing school bag, having breakfast, getting dressed, tidying room, home reading. Thinking Making sensible decisions

Never miss a chance to dance!

Over the last two weeks of Term Two, Rooms One and Six came together to move and groove to some awesome music. After just short two weeks, they had learnt the moves to two songs and were able to Hip Hop and Cha Cha away! They had a blast and grew in confidence over the two weeks, making mistakes along the way but showing their 'can-do' attitudes. Every single one of them were excited to showcase their newly acquired skills in the final performances, even in front of an audience.

Speech Help

We are writing speeches this week around what we can do to better our planet. Topic Examples: - Do not harm our animals - choose an endangered species - recycle - say no to plastic bags - Do not litter - Walk or ride to school CLICK HERE for an example of a good speech - Write about something you find interesting or you are passionate about -Your aim is to persuade and inform, not just one or the other.  - Make sure you hook in the reader at the beginning. Do not start with "hi my name is...". You could start with: A fact, describe the thing - e.g. a plastic bag - and have the audience guessing what it might be (example in link), a rhetorical question, onomatopoeia/sound effect, or an exclamation - e.g. Stop! Think before you drop that rubbish! - You could speak from the perspective of a kiwi (or animal) that is having it's habitat destroyed.  - Aim for 2 minutes

Mihimihi

Room 1 have been aiming to use more Te Reo in the classroom throughout the day. We are making great steps to use more Maori in our day to day life at school.  Below is the Mihimihi that we have been learning in class, we started my just saying lines 4, 5, and 6, with help from the posters that we have on our board. Now many of us can confidently say the whole thing from memory!  Ka tangi te tītī, ka tangi te kākā, ka tangi hoki ahau, Tihei mauri ora. Ko . . . . . . . . tōku pāpā Ko . . . . . . . . tōku māmā Ko . . . . . . . . ahau Nō reira Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa We are going to continue to learn this in class and we will be adding more information to it as we progress. Please help us at home so that we are ready for in class learning.

Spooky Stories

In Room 1 we are focussing on writing descriptive stories. We were inspired by a dragon coming out of a match box in the story 'The Lion in the Meadow'. Here are some snapshots of what we have been working on. I was walking to my school in a castle.... "roar!" said a mighty voice. I knew that I had to summon my mighty dragons. - Tane I came to a door that was never there before. I opened the crusty old door and it made a creaking noise. - Isaac One morning I crept up an alley way to a door. I opened it and it made a scraping noise. "crrrr!." It was so dark and I didn't know where to go. - Ruby One misty morning I was walking to my school until I saw a house. It was a dark, black, spooky house. The paint was peeling off like a snake peeling its old skin. - Asher "I'm not lying, there was even steam coming out of it's horns." Then it came stomping up to me, I quickly yelled, "Mum! Mum! Mum! A monster!" - Karin

Beach Week Buddy Art!

Image
Room One has been lucky enough to work with the lovely Room 10, 13 and 16. Together we reminisced on our time at the beach for Beach Ed. and our 'Beach Week' learning. Buddies big and small work together to create their own beach-y master piece!   Our wonderful work is on display in the library. If you can't make it into school to check it out, enjoy these photos of their hard work! Otherwise, pop in to have a closer look! We will continue to buddy with these classes throughout the year so get excited for what's to come :)

Hockey Player of the Day - Week 11

Image
After missing out on Hockey for the last couple of Wednesdays due to some wild weather in weeks 9 and 10, we got to squeeze in a catch up hockey session this week. Thank you sunshine! Today our player of the day was Devontae! He  displayed great skill with a hockey stick and sportsmanship, showing amazing respect to the couch and trying 100%. Keep up the amazing work, Devontae. Keep your fingers crossed for great weather tomorrow so we can have our final hockey session of the term...

Writing to Another School!

Image
Over the past couple of weeks we have been chipping away at some great writing in different shapes and forms. Room 1 have worked hard creating metaphors on postcards, finding facts, and sharing information to then share with Room 6, Stoke School all the way in Nelson.  Did you know that "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki maunga horonukupokaiwhen uakitanatahu" is the longest word in Maori? And "Pneumonoultramicroscopicsili covolcanoconiosis" is pretty impressive. We learnt that all together in Room 1 we have 99 siblings. We have some elbow lickers and ear wrigglers, too.  Here is what we sent to the lovely Room 6 of Stoke School... If you haven't already, pop into the class and have a look at our amazing metaphors displayed on our writing wall!  Your child received a notice on Friday. If you take it into any Warehouse Stationary this will allow them to send a free postcard to anywhere in the world! Get writing :)

Hockey Player of the Day - Week 8

Image
We have been learning great new skills during our hockey sessions this term. Through many fun hockey games we have learnt how to hold a hockey stick and how to control the ball using different dribbling techniques. Each session we will have a player of the day. Our player of the day is someone who is displaying the Key Competencies and our School Value, making our class and our school proud. Asher is the player of the day for Week 8. He displayed a strong ability manage himself, show respect to the coach and put in 100% effort at all times. Well done Asher and great 'penguin position'! Keep an eye out to see who it is next week :)

Global Play Day!

Image
Throwback to Global Play Day where we had an epic Friday fun day on the first week of school! As part of Global Play Day Room One was able to play, explore, create and use their imagination. We went on the water slide... Got crafty with playdough, pipe cleaners, and popsicle sticks...                                 Played some games and music and even made some of our own...

Spelling at home

I have set this up as a week programme however it does not have to be done this way.  In the front of the spelling and reading log book there is a list of words to be learnt. The words highlighted in yellow are the words your child knows out of list 1-3. They were only tested on list 1-3. The goal is fro work through that list until they can correctly spell those words. Practice makes perfect! Monday Write the words five times and find the meaning of each word e.g.  environment  environment  environment  environment  environment        environment - t he surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. Tuesday Break up each word into syllables. Children can clap the syllables out. e.g.  a-com-mo-da-tion Wednesday Add a prefix or suffix to each word e.g. lock = unlock OR dance = dancing Thursday Use the words in a sentence to bring out the meaning. You could try include all words into a story.  e.g.  We can look a
